Our Story

Africa deserves systems that connect opportunity.

CEBOWA was established to build the systems that enable women and youth to participate fully in Africa's formal, green, blue and climate-resilient economies.

Systems Change Finance. Climate. Enterprise. Leadership.

Lasting change happens when the systems around women and youth work together rather than in isolation.

Why CEBOWA Exists

Africa deserves something different. Africa deserves systems that connect opportunity.

Our Story

Africa stands at one of the most defining moments in its history.

It is home to the world's youngest population, extraordinary natural wealth, growing entrepreneurial energy, and some of the fastest-growing economies on the planet. Across our cities, villages, coastlines, forests, and farmlands, women and youth are driving commerce, feeding communities, caring for families, protecting ecosystems, and building enterprises that sustain local economies.

Yet despite their resilience and ingenuity, millions remain excluded from the opportunities they help create.

Across the continent, women continue to operate predominantly within informal economies where businesses often remain unregistered, access to affordable finance is limited, markets are fragmented, social protection is inadequate, and investment opportunities remain out of reach. At the same time, climate change is disrupting livelihoods, threatening food security, increasing environmental degradation, and widening existing inequalities.

Connected Priorities

These challenges are deeply interconnected.

Too often, these issues are addressed independently through fragmented programmes that solve one problem while leaving others untouched.

Economic inclusionCannot be separated from climate resilience.
Financial inclusionCannot be separated from entrepreneurship.
Nature conservationCannot be separated from community livelihoods.
Women's leadershipCannot be separated from sustainable development.

CE Banking on Women in Africa (CEBOWA) was established with a simple but transformative conviction: lasting change happens when finance, innovation, climate action, enterprise, leadership, technology, policy, and partnerships work together rather than in isolation.

We are building more than programmes. We are building systems.

Our Vision

We envision an Africa where every woman and young person has the opportunity not only to survive but to thrive - where entrepreneurship is supported by accessible finance, where climate action creates sustainable livelihoods, where innovation reaches underserved communities, and where economic growth leaves no one behind.

In this future, women are not viewed merely as beneficiaries of development.

We believe that when women prosper, families become stronger, businesses become more productive, communities become more resilient, ecosystems are better protected, and economies become more inclusive.

Investing in women is therefore not simply a social imperative - it is one of Africa's greatest economic opportunities.

A Systems Approach to Transformation

For decades, development efforts have often treated finance, education, entrepreneurship, climate action, conservation, and leadership as separate conversations.

We believe they are part of the same journey.

A woman cannot successfully grow a business without access to skills, finance, markets, supportive policies, and resilient ecosystems.

A young entrepreneur cannot fully participate in the green economy without opportunities for innovation, investment, mentorship, and market access.

Communities cannot protect forests, rivers, oceans, and biodiversity without sustainable livelihoods that make conservation economically viable.

This understanding shapes everything we do.

Rather than implementing isolated projects, CEBOWA designs integrated pathways that connect people to opportunity.

We work across sectors to help women and youth move from informal livelihoods to formal enterprises, from exclusion to financial inclusion, from climate vulnerability to resilience, and from untapped potential to sustainable prosperity.

Building Partnerships That Scale Impact

The challenges facing Africa are too complex for any single institution to solve alone.

Transformation requires governments, development partners, financial institutions, conservation organizations, private sector leaders, research institutions, philanthropies, investors, innovators, and communities working together toward shared outcomes.

CEBOWA exists to bring these partners together.

We serve as a platform for collaboration, helping to design, coordinate, and implement solutions that create lasting impact.

Our role is not simply to deliver programmes. Our role is to strengthen ecosystems.

We convene diverse expertise, mobilize knowledge, build institutional capacity, unlock partnerships, and connect resources where they are needed most.

By working across sectors, we create opportunities that are larger than any single organization could achieve alone.

Where Economy and Environment Meet

Economic transformation and environmental stewardship are not competing priorities - they are mutually reinforcing.

Across Africa, women are at the forefront of agriculture, fisheries, natural resource management, renewable energy adoption, and community conservation. Their knowledge, leadership, and entrepreneurship are essential to protecting biodiversity while creating resilient livelihoods.

CEBOWA embraces this reality by integrating climate action, nature conservation, blue economy opportunities, green enterprise development, and sustainable finance into our work.

From restoring critical ecosystems to supporting climate-smart enterprises and advancing green investment, we believe that Africa's future prosperity depends on healthy people living alongside healthy ecosystems.

The transition to Green & Blue Economies is not only an environmental necessity - it is an unprecedented opportunity to create dignified jobs, strengthen local economies, and empower communities to lead sustainable development.

Looking Ahead

Our ambition extends beyond today's programmes.

We are laying the foundations for an ecosystem that connects women and youth with the knowledge, partnerships, opportunities, and financial pathways they need to thrive.

Over time, this ecosystem will continue to grow through new partnerships, innovative financing approaches, leadership development, knowledge sharing, technology, and collaborative solutions that respond to Africa's evolving needs.

Every initiative we undertake contributes to one larger purpose: building an Africa where opportunity is more accessible, prosperity is more inclusive, and development is more sustainable.

This is not a journey we can undertake alone.
